About the IofAM

What is the IofAM?

The Institute of Association Management (IofAM) is an independent professional body made up of managers and senior staff responsible for the management, development and governance of trade bodies, professional institutes, societies, chambers of commerce, voluntary organisations, charities and other representative groups.

The purpose of the Institute is to develop, promote and share best practice for the benefit of IofAM members and all those involved in the governance of associations. To achieve its objectives, the IofAM offers a forum for education, training and development, dissemination of information, networking, and research.

Who are our members?

The IofAM has over 200 members - association managers from a broad group of industries up and down the country. Members include a high proportion of chief executives and senior staff but the Institute also encourages applications from anyone working in the association management field. Our seminars, masterclasses, round-tables and other education and training programmes are geared to all levels, and work to encourage the development of professionals in this varied sector.

Institute Fellows are members from the most senior levels of leadership and play an important role in the Institute's activities.

Member benefits include direct access to updated industry news, a wide range of training courses, seminars and networking events, insider information on our campaign and lobbying work, a range of discounts and special offers and the entitlement to use the designatory letters FIAM, MIAM or AIAM.

Background

The institute was founded in 1933 as the Secretaries Club and it later changed its name to the Society of Association Executives, providing an opportunity for the exchange of information, networking and social interaction. A substantial reorganisation in 2000 saw the birth of the Institute of Association Management.

Objectives of the IofAM

The IAM is an unincorporated association. Its objectives are:

  1. To provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas.
  2. To provide services which meet the needs of members.
