Delegates gave an exceptionally high rating to this interactive day with senior-level delegates from across the UK, featuring a series of hand-on sessions looking at strategies for effective leadership. The day was led by Susan Sarfati, CAE, President and CEO of the Center for Association Leadership and Executive Vice President of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), in Washington DC.

Susan drew on analysis and research which has been published by ASAE and on the examples of a host of inspirational leaders. Using examples of leadership practice and philosophy ranging from Lao Tse (6th century BC) to Jack Welch (Former Chairman and CEO of General Electric), the discussion highlighted a variety of ways to recognise and maximise individual leadership potential. Working with groups, backing partnerships, having the courage to make difficult decisions and using resources creatively were all cited as important factors contributing to powerful and inspirational leadership.

Delegates each received a copy of 7 Measures of Success, ASAE's new guide to effective association leadership - not available in the UK. This practical reference analyses what makes effective associations work – and how less successful associations may find ways to improve. Copies are available from the IofAM.

The morning’s sessions were followed by round-table discussions as part of the Institute’s annual 3-course Christmas in the elegant surroundings of London’s Commonwealth Club.
