Alfred Milner, 1st Viscount Milner, born in 1854 was a controversial German-born British statesman and colonial administrator. He was appointed High Commissioner for Southern Africa and Governor of Cape Colony in 1897. It was in South Africa where Lord Milner spent a large majority of his life, formulating a policy that was to try and combine the upholding of British interests with an attempt to deal justly with the Transvaal and Orange Free State governments of the time. Milner died in Sturry Court, near Canterbury on May 13, 1925 of sleeping sickness soon after returning from South Africa. His “viscount” title, lacking suitable heirs, died with him.
The Lord Milner Hotel is an elegant townhouse hotel with eleven beautifully designed rooms of three different grades, “executive”, “deluxe” and “suite”. There is a lift to all rooms which include flat-screen satellite TV, Internet access, direct dial phone, dual voltage power supply, fridge, hairdryer, kettle, tea/coffee making facilities.
The stylish executive rooms are spacious and the deluxe rooms have four poster beds. The Garden Suite has its own lounge with a cozy gas fire and spacious adjoining conservatory which serves as a lounge, dining room and kitchen. The conservatory leads onto a pretty, paved garden. The warm tones and soft furnishings create a feeling of luxury and comfort throughout. All rooms have ensuite marble bathrooms with bath and shower.
