Keynote Speaker at the 2006 IofAM Annual Conference, was formerly General Secretary of the Labour Party and Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) and UNISON. He is now Vice-Chancellor of the University of Teesside, a director of several public and private sector bodies including Britannia Building Society, and a life peer.
