Susan’s professional background is education management.
She was deputy head teacher in a comprehensive school in South
Wales. She left education and worked in the alcohol and drugs
field for two years then in 1994 she was appointed Crime Concern
Safer Cities Co-ordinator for Merthyr Tydfil. Safer Merthyr Tydfil
Ltd, was set up to continue the Safer Cities’ work with
Susan as Executive Director. The charity raised over 2M for regeneration
work in Merthyr Tydfil between 1997-2000.
Susan was awarded the OBE in 1999 for her contribution to community
safety in Wales. In May 2000 she was seconded to the Office of
the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) as Head of the Neighbourhood
Wardens’ Team (NWT) in the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit (NRU).
Susan headed the Neighbourhood Management and Warden Team
that provided a £107M Neighbourhood Management pathfinder
programme and a £93M warden programme.
